Our favorite time of year is fast approaching. the 40th Anniversary of Milwaukee's Festa Italiana takes place at the Summerfest grounds July 21-23. And we're kicking off the fun one day early, on Thursday, July 20, with Italian Heritage Day at Villa Palermo -- located at 3301 W. Canal St. in the beautiful Menomonee Valley.
Join us at Pizzeria 3301 for Italian street food specials all day and a fabulous free show by the Italian Flag Throwers of the Florentine from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The tradition of flag throwing dates back to the Middle Ages. When armies went into battle, they were led by a flag bearer. Groups now pay tribute to that tradition with men in medieval costumes tossing flags high the air, catching them and performing intricately choreographed maneuvers. Drums and trumpets make for heart-stopping performances. Palermo’s is also sponsoring the group’s performances at this year’s Festa.
